Baby Shower

I made this for a shower gift.

This is a little outfit I bought

...added the felt bird.

Here is the card,

going with a tweet theme.

Here are the 2 outfits...tweeked and we made

a new hat.

Designed this outfit.

It is a soft Japanese knit with mushrooms.

I appliqued the larger mushrooms.

The fabric is a vintage gingham linen from

an old pillow. And the stems are alphabet letters.

Hand stitched it all on, so you see the stitching.

Girls are fun to design for.

And the last outfit will be in the bunny line

for fall, hopefully. Not mushrooms but

a something a little more relative to

Cricket Island.

I forgot to take my computer home

this weekend. Sitting in it's little red suitcase

right where I left it. Oh, I feel like I had lost

my right arm.

I wanted to share this video clip.

My son is a fisherman in Dutch Harbor Alaska.

This is not my sons boat. This is a Crabber,

he is on a 125' Dragger. A larger boat.

The weather conditions are like this right now.

It was -5 degrees and they are chipping ice off the boat.

I have been on vacation since

I got back from New York...Dec 15th.

All ready to head back to work today...

and I found out last night we don't go back

until Tuesday. Hallelujah. Now, it's not

like I don't love my work...but it has been so

great hanging out with the Dude and taking life

a little bit slower.

We went out to dinner with Sam and his mama-dada last night. ( That is one word to him.)

He was such a trooper having missed his nap. He dipped chip after chip into a little

cup of ketchup. At 19 months he is changing so much.

Love this little guy....like I couldn't ever imagine.

Being a granny is the greatest thing in the whole wide world.

On a different note. When I do go back to work, I will only be in my

studio for 4 days and then we leave for a very quick 4 day trip.

We will be attending a funeral in Taipei. Our brother Carlson Ling

will be honored January 9th.

This man, along with his brother...saved Bunnies By The Bay.

He owns our factory in China. (It is small and only produces

our baby things. Sewn and finished by hand.)

He was 70 years old, and was also a Rugby Referee. He heart

gave up on a track like this close to the factory, as he was

training for a match coming up in Beijing in a few days.

He was an amazing man...who lived a very full and rich

life. Loved by many and honored by all.

Life goes by so quickly. Sam is not even 2 years old yet,

and Carlson was 70. So little time to enjoy all there

is to this gift...life. I am so grateful to have the

opportunity to know and love all those who cross

my path. For each and everyone has taught

me a life lesson, from love... to letting-go.

Thank-you for following this journey with me.

If only with words and pictures...

sometimes that's all it takes...to feel connected.

It makes me wonder, what the new year will bring in.

What ever that is...the appreciation for my humble

little life has been lifted.

We made it home.

Whew.

New York at Christmas is pretty cool.

Also, really busy and crowded.
The weather was beautiful, sunny and not
all that chilly. People were eating lunch outside.

We walked into Macy's...and right out again.
It was crazy and frantic.

Three years ago...we decided not to exchange gifts.

It is so amazing how it releases all the tension of trying to find
the perfect gift. We enjoy the holidays without all the

headache of shopping. We will get Sam presents, because

Christmas is all about children. Adults...we have everything

we need. So we will spend time together, eat, chill and just

enjoy family time.

CURMUDGEON

Definition:

A bad tempered or surly person.

surly:

Irritably sullen and churlish.

churlish:

A lack of civility

Civility:

A polite act.

basically

a cranky, crabby,

whiney, sourpuss

I like the following explanation better.

A curmudgeon's reputation for malevolence is

undeserved. We don't hate mankind,

just mankind's absurdities. We are just

as sensitive as the next person, but hide

our vulnerability beneath a crust of misanthropy,

(distrust of humankind). We ease the pain by

turning hurt to humor. Nature has endowed us

with astute perception and sly wit. We have our

version of the truth which unsettles some, even

though we soften it with humor.

Here are some other

curmudgeons.

What this is all in reference to was

the recent show I did in Tustin.

Doing a show on the road is

a lot of work.

The traveling, setting up,

selling, taking down, being

nice for hours on end. Repeating yourself

over and over....basically selling a little piece

of yourself.

For me, I do that with my art.

Here you go...I made this for you...

now can I go back to my studio and

do what I love...which is create.

I don't know about other artists

but for me...It is hard to stand there

and sell, me.

Plus physically, I feel tired and old!!!!

My mantra is

"I am to old for this!"

Meaning...can't I just make stuff

and someone else sell it?

Oh Yeah,

That is why

Bunnies By The Bay exists.

I have surrounded myself with

people who do all that.

They are good at it, experts...

and they like selling and organizing

and running spread sheets as much

as I like sewing and drawing.

But this need to have an identity

and self expression outside of bunnies

has led me to selling my own art.

It is like starting over at 56 and being

all alone without my sisters there to protect me.

(Or as they would say protect others from me.)

I did meet some really nice people, and I love all my

earth angle girls. We had fun, can't wait to do it

all again. But in the moment standing all day on

a concrete floor...the

CURMUDGEON comes out in me.

Not to the customers and nice, nice people who

come out to see us, just to my fellow artists.

My reward at the end of the day

An Ale...makes that pissy part of me

disappear and I can have fun and laugh at

life and myself. I will never stop being

honest, and truthful...but I'll work on

my filter system. In the meantime

I am happy to be home and grateful

to those who understand and love me anyways.

Whew...that was a whirlwind of activity-fun-work-tears.

I am talking about the Country Living show in Atlanta

at Stone Mountain.

It is so much work and effort to put on the Earth Angels show.

Most of us just fly in and set up.

Jen, Michelle and Sue...drive 16 hours in a u-haul

get there hours before the rest of us, and drive home

after taking down the tent...in the dark.

Is it worth it?

Mmmmm at moments..no

At other moments... yes

The reason I do it?

The earth angel ladies.

I love each and everyone of them.

Since I won't be here for my sisters birthday,

and I did nothing for her last year,

I decided to decorate her office.

Here is an overall.

I printed in black and white

family pictures.

We had this great old ladder I used

to hang pictures on.

And wire racks

and bins to hold paperwork.

Here is a picture of her, I drew, using a cute

2nd grade picture of her.

School pictures I sewed to vintage playing cards and

framed. Took the corner tabs from an old

family album.

These are roses I dried and taped to her

window with old family pictures next to them.

This is a mobil of watercolor painted stars that I

hung from a wire vase I cut up...added a light.

A vintage irish linen tea towel made into a pillow.

On her windows I put these beagle ribbons.

A bunny doll in a vintage dress and roller skates.

A t shirt I found in my repurposed basket, I

did an image transfer of Bea, her beagle.

And the side panels are the sleeves of an old

flannel shirt.

I had collected beagle contest ribbons, a 1906 book, titled

"Suzanne". And the beagle t towel. Other than

that, everything was just laying around my studio.

Every time she went in her room,

there was something new.

Updates

He can say...mama,dada, meow, all gone, uh-oh,

more, up,
roar like a dinosaur,
give hugs, (which

doesn't include arms)
shake his head yes and no.

He likes to organize the pantry,
sweep, empty drawers,

take his new boots off and on, a lot!
Put hats on, and off

Climb anything,
but new favorite is in and out of the high chair,

and play with the clasp...which he needs help with...we did

that at least a 100 times.
Still loves to chill and cuddle...

when he isn't running.

Loves to sweep and mop.

A walk to the park...we saw lots of ducks.

Likes to put on his own hats. This one he prefers over

his eyes...and walks around bumping into stuff.

Max got lots of hugs. Grampa 0.

Roche Harbor on San Juan Island

A weekend boat trip to Roche Harbor

on beautiful San Juan Island.

It was amazing.

I have been so busy, and

I have been dealing with work issues.

We had a Sam weekend,

It was beautiful, so we

swam in the pool. Played

outside, went for a walk to

the park in his wagon.

And when you try and take the

My dude and I recently took a little

road trip. Down Hwy 101
Westport WA, to Cannon Beach Oregon...
Then to Portland.

We took the 63 VW....Safari windows open and
chillin on the highway. It was a blast.
I also wanted to experiment with a VW pop-up store.
Of course I am a pansy ass, law abiding wimp.
So I am nervous...I will get in trouble, I don't have
a permit..I'm going to get a ticket and on and on.

Well
We pull into Cannon Beach..The sun is shining,
people everywhere. We find an open spot
right in front of an ice cream shop on the main
drag. I set up... no one really notices...I'm nervous,
sweating. Finally a couple walks up, they buy 2
cards and 4 buttons. Then...I am outta here.
I did it, I made a sale....Let Vamoose.

called 8mm.

Can't wait to see all my buddies.

I need to rethink how I will do the show this year.

Cardboard does not like wind, humidity and moisture.

So back to the drawing board for display ideas.

Birthday day for me.

Yesterday was my Birthday.

I am really not into birthdays.

I don't like to make a big deal about it.

It has always just felt like another day.

But I do like to spend that day with the

people I love the most. All 3 of my kids

had to work that day. One in Alaska,

One in California and one that made it

later that night. But my guy, my

daughter-in-law and grandson

gave me the best birthday day ever.

Sam just happened to be sprouting 2 new

molars so he was not up to par.

TEETHING, OUCH.

He tried his very best.

We went to the park, and just

kinda wandered around the house.

I tried to get his picture.

Here are the results.

1. Hard time capturing him...even though he

wasn't moving very fast...He moved fast enough

to get out of camera range.

2. He wouldn't look at me!

3. He hurt, so he cried. This is just

one of those moments he did not have

his pacifier or blanket with him.

4. He was so sleepy and had a fever.

But wouldn't sleep.

5. Ouch, my mouth hurts!

6. Grandpa couldn't get him

to excited about a push in his wagon.

But, every second with this little dumpling is pure

joy....Best Birthday day ever.

A Nautical Bride

Chris our amazing talented curator of Hutch Studio,

was given a challenge. To create the Wedding dress

in our Bunnies By The Bay Hareytale story.

Elsie Atterberry, (our gram), mends clothing in her shop

all day. She is given the task of making a Wedding dress for

a desperate bride who's future husband is leaving for the

fishing grounds and they must get married right away.

Gram uses what she has laying about, because no one

has money or materials to spare.

His project runway

challenged turned out this MASTERPIECE.

Using vintage nautical maps, a bit of wire and glue.

Here is his CREATION.

He has the dress lit from underneath.

Birds are flying from her wire tiara.

Multi-tasking

Generally

I work on 5 things at one time.

If I get up from my desk...on my way to find something...which

half way to my destination I forget what it is I am looking for...

and I get distracted by....a project half finished on the ironing board...

or I'll do a little picking up, that leads to...oh what's in this box

and so on and so on.

So Friday I am finishing up some new ideas for Bunnies Spring 2012.

And making a T-shirt to wear today. This is a T that I bought

at Anthropologie. I loved the loose, (aka...hide tummy) uneven hemline

and soft material of this shirt. I bought 2, then they went on sale for $10.00

so I bought 3 more.

This T shirt was white...I dyed it orange. Later I put a patch on it

that said, " LUCKY ". But I put it on crooked...that bugged me.

So I tried taking the patch off. No go... I ended up cutting a hole in the shirt.

***MISTAKES ARE OPPORTUNITIES***

I just cut out the whole patch and put this on there. A collaged shirt.

That is a scan onto fabric of my mom, aunt and their cousin.

Here is the back of the neck.

I covered the button, sewed it on, then pounded

it down with a hammer so it is flat. The fabric is

from a vintage quilt.

P.S ( I find clothing that I love. In the fashion world it will only be around

for a few months. Some of these include sweats from Lucky Brand.

A super soft long maternity t-shirt from Target. A 2 layer in front super-super

soft T from Lucky. I have worn all these so much that I have to dye them to

hide stains, embroider over holes, patch, embellish...make those sweats into skirts

just play around essentially to give them new life.

Well my 4 days with Sam are over.

It was so much fun. Nothing like

watching a one year old loving life.

Here he is watching an airplane. When he hears jet noises , he stops and looks up.

Here he was pissy, not all that happy for some reason. Climbing stairs though, nothing

stops him from moving...even a bad mood.

And he knows how to go down stairs. " STOP...turn around." He has heard that

a hundred times.

Still pissy.....but so stinking cute!

He is just a little cuddle bug. Loves to be held and snuggle.

Play...run....climb, repeat, repeat, repeat.

Eating....ahhhh not so much. There is to much to do.

He actually likes walking around with food. Especially

O's. But to feed him....not so interested unless it's cheese.

We designed a new backpack for our

Spring line. I gave one of the prototypes

to Sam. My little test marketing grandson.

Mama put it on him...so proud.

I have been absent, sorry.

Working on the old muffin top as mentioned in

the last post.
I happen to be an...

kind of gal.

The last 2 weeks have been,

ALL ABOUT ME.

....Because....

I did this.

Yep.
I did it.

The entire 10 days.

(My partner in crime

didn't last through the first day.

He ate pizza of all things!)

Timing is everything.

I guess I had to get to the point where

I couldn't live in a body that has been so good to

me...and that I was not treating well. So it rebelled.

It hurt. It wouldn't heal. It's tired. When you wake up

in the morning and your first thought is, "I'm tired"

it's pretty clear...

The time had arrived.

I thought about it for a very long time.

A couple of years ago I watched utube videos
of other peoples experiences. I thought there was

no way I could do that.

But slowly a realization came over me that,
I needed a break from eating. I needed to
step back and not think about food. I was
tired of always being hungry, but never satisfied.

Many years ago a friend once told me
"Krystal, when you get control of your weight,
you will have control of your life."
I never forgot that.

So, I got the book The Master Cleanse and the following book
Beyond the Master Cleanse.

I read them, cover to cover, and kept reading

both, over and over.

I took one week to prepare myself

by drinking the lemonade all day

eating fish and a salad at night.

I still drank wine.

Food tasted AMAZING.

We can only appreciate the miracle of a sunrise
if we have waited in the darkness.

I chose to do the herbal laxatives

and the tea, instead of the salt water flush.

Did I suffer...yes.

Badly....no.

Headaches, tired, a little nausea

kicked in, people got out of my way, as I stampeded to the kitchen.)

I am eating fruits, vegetables, and fish,
healthy fats, a few nuts, coconut water
and drinking lots of PH balanced water,
herbal teas, and...

...today is

my first day of this.

So I have made my first couple of smoothies.

It's pretty good. You make it, to fit you. There are

countless variations. Just pick a green leafy vegetable, like

Kale, endive, pursale, beet greens, dandelion greens,

chard, spinach, fennel, lambsquarter, chickweed,

stinging nettle, arugula, cilantro, parsley....

and mix it with as much fruit as you want,

a little water, coconut water or juice,

dates, maple syrup, for sweetness.

vanilla or herbs for flavor. You can make

savory or sweet. Good for all ages and wow,

it just smells so fresh.

O.K. thats it, I have to go because....

my wayward partner just asked me to make him another one.

Happy Fathers Day

DAD's.

My father was lost at sea.

He was 49 years old.

That was 25 years ago.

I still miss him.

Our Hutch Studio is dedicated to our

Father and brother.

And all the others

...lost.

The last month and a half we have been

working frantically to get the shop ready

for visitors from far away who need to see feel

and touch our story.

Hutch now clearly tells a tale

of two little girls waiting for their father to

return from the sea.

One can only sit idle for so long, especially....

children.

So they bide their time by playing with a

household full of rabbits.

Their grandmother comforts and consoles

them, when she them stare out into the ocean.

This tale is no fantasy created to entertain our

visitors. This story is very real. We live it everyday.

Bunnies saved the sisters.

Who would have ever thought?

Today I want to wish my father

who still lives in my heart and comforts

me in a way that is connected, not by

flesh and blood but by a thread that

can never be broken.

And also to....

My only son.

He also is a fisherman..

..away at sea.

He is an amazing father.

When he is home,

This is an old doll I changed the face on.

It is now a bunny doll.

as a lamp shade. It turns from the heat of a small bulb.

Sometimes you need to put paper aside

and draw on fabric.

I then did an outline stitch.

Goin for a wee sail.

Recently I posted about special times spent

on Guemes Island at our friends cabin.

On his way to Western Washington University in the fall.

My little pumpkin is

ONE!

Granny is showing him one of 4 vehicles he got...insane!

He likes sugar. But ended up playing with the

plastic plate the cake came on.

pushing buttons...especially phone.

I have been kinda busy.

Getting Hutch ready for V.I.P.'s

coming in June.

...AND...

Getting my beach house ready

for sale.

I am officially listing it

as of today.

So we have been tweeking it.

But also,

enjoying it.

The other night we snacked

on these...thanks to Rick the

shrimp catcher.

...FRESH...

Caught that day.

Broiled and served with

browned butter, a few chili flakes,

salt and pepper.

Better than lobster or crab.

Strawberries not local,

but pretty good.

And we ate around this.

One of the benefits of a cold May.

We need to build a good fire to stay warm.

We are very busy at

Bunnies By The Bay's

HUTCH.

Our makeover is in full swing.

When you walk into

our HUTCH you are walking into our story.

Two rambunctious little girls and a houseful of

shy rabbit.

Yesterday we videotaped the shop.
